FIREFIGHTER
The City of Pacific Grove is not currently accepting applications
for the position of FIREFIGHTER, to perform firefighting and emergency service activities in protecting life and property; to respond to fire and emergency service calls; and to perform station and equipment maintenance and other work as required.

Essential functions:
Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Maintain and upkeep emergency apparatus, fire engine and other fire equipment; perform minor repairs to Department apparatus and equipment. Respond to fire and emergency alarms; help lay hose and assist with the operation of a variety of fire and emergency equipment; assist with fire suppression, medical treatment and hazardous materials incidents. Perform station maintenance; clean station living quarters and maintain them in a clean and orderly condition. Assist in the testing of fire hoses and hydrants. Study and review Fire Department rules and regulations, fire hazards, firefighting techniques and emergency procedures. Participate in training exercises; develop skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operation and other related areas. Assist with public education; provide CPR instruction, grade school presentations and fire drills. Participate in bi-monthly volunteer training. May assist with fire prevention and fire inspection functions. May interact with the public, make presentations and engage in public relations. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

RESERVE FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM
The Pacific Grove Fire Department Reserve Firefighter program was designed to provide Volunteer Firefighters with additional fire service opportunity, a foundation for a fire service career and build internal relationships with the paid members. This goal is accomplished through the Reserve Firefighter Program, which allows Volunteers to work shifts side by side with the paid members. The end result is enhanced training, insight into fire service organizational culture, and developing internal relationships. To further enhance the program, Reserve Firefighters are paid $8.00 an hour broken down into 15 or 24 hours shifts 7 days a week, 365 days a year!

All Volunteer personnel are eligible for the Reserve Firefighter Program once they have met the following minimal qualifications:

  • Graduate of the Pacific Grove Fire Department
    Basic Fire Academy.
  • Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Monterey County First Responder.
  • Completion of Training Manual equipment location sections.

VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER
To perform firefighting and emergency service activities in protecting life and property; and to respond to fire and emergency service calls. All members will be considered Volunteer City Employees and be covered by Workers' Compensation for liability purposes during training and rescue situations. New members will complete a firefighter training academy course before they are placed into emergency situations.

Example of Duties:
Volunteer Firefighters work side by side with paid fire personnel and respond to fire and emergency alarms; help lay hose and assist with the operation of a variety of fire and emergency equipment; assist with fire suppression, medical treatment and hazardous materials incidents, study and review Fire Department rules and regulations, fire hazards, firefighting techniques and emergency procedures. Volunteer Firefighters may assist with public education; CPR instruction, grade school presentations, fire inspections and other various fire responsibilities regarding fire prevention and public education. Those Volunteer Firefighters who meet the necessary requirements may participate in the Department's Reserve Firefighter Program by working either a
15 or 24 hour shift.
